Machine Dreams
A 10 track electronic album (1h 11m 15s) — released April 20th 2023 on nonclassical
Australian born UK-based pianist, composer and technologist Zubin Kanga blurs the boundaries between music and technology in his latest album Machine Dreams. This ten-track album inspired by cyborgs and other sci-fi themes, features music from a host of internationally acclaimed experimental and cutting-edge composers: Alex Paxton, Tansy Davies, Alex Groves, Nwando Ebizie, Robin Haigh, Jasmin Kent Rodgman, CHAINES, Amble Skuse, Ben Nobuto and Kanga himself.
A fearless advocate of the new and unknown, Kanga commissioned Machine Dreams as part of Cyborg Soloists; a four-year UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellowship research project, hosted by London's Royal Holloway University. At the forefront of curating and creating interdisciplinary musical programmes for over a decade, Kanga's new album draws together classic synthesizers and pioneering sensor technology, unlocking new possibilities in music making through interactions with AI and machine learning; interactive visuals and VR; motion and biosensors; and new hybrid instruments.
Kanga is a dynamic and versatile pianist, bringing both virtuosity and a sense of play to his performances, deftly juggling the technical and dramatic requirements of the diverse works... - Limelight
For Kanga, electronics are clearly not an addition, but a fundamental part of working with his instrument, and the physicality of his performance a keystone rather than an afterthought.... It is because of Kanga’s assuredness not just as a pianist but as a performer of sound and action that this programme worked so well as a whole - The Journal of Music
it was impossible not to be gripped and fascinated by Zubin Kanga - The Times
Watching the performances leaves you with the impression that you are the AI, trying to compute an endless stream of data and taking days to piece together what it all means. - The Wire
