Evocative jazz and outlandish improvisation come together inPremonitions of the Unbuilt City, the upcoming release fromMatt RogersandKit Downes.Bringing together influences from classical, jazz, vaporwave and steampunk, the album opens with agitation and dissent and slowly unfolds into a more centred and reflective atmosphere. Complex chromatic inflections and prismatic harmonies contrast with the delicacy of Kit's piano sound, drawing depth and colour from the instrument. Undulating shapes and forms become unpredictable yet somehow coherent, as if governed by a deep, unknowable logic.

After the production of Matt's latest operaShe Described It to Deathwas cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, he was determined to find another outlet for the opera's music. He called on his friend and long-time collaborator Kit Downes, and the pair set about re-imagining the material for solo piano. Working remotely through lockdown, Matt and Kit collaborated via email and video call to edit the material, andPremonitions of the Unbuilt Citycame to life.
